Definition of Problem and Scope of Project
You present a genealogical problem that needs solving. Together we define and set a time limit for the initial research and subsequent phases. Each project is different and will need customization so please call or email with any questions or concerns.

Contract and Deposit
A contract signed by both parties guarantees that there are no surprises. I require a retainer for up to one-half of the contracted hours. Research begins upon my receipt of the signed contract, retainer, and all relevant documentation.

Fees
I charge an hourly rate for all analysis, research, writing, and travel beyond my local area. Mileage is charged at the current IRS allowable rate. Incidental expenses such as tolls, parking, copy, postage and repository research fees are billed at cost. Rush jobs will incur a highly hourly rate.

Research and Analysis
I research on the internet, in local repositories, archives, and libraries, and travel regularly to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. On occasion I will sub-contract to researchers in other locations. I work according to the standards of the Board for Certification of Genealogists©.

Report and Invoice
The report will contain a detailed analysis of results, both positive and negative, and will include copies of records obtained, with sources cited according to prevailing standards in the field. Each invoice will consist of an acknowledgment of receipt of retainer; breakdown of hours of research and travel, including dates and repositories visited; and any incidental expenses.

Next Steps
Based on recommendations in the report, you can then decide what steps to take next, including the decision to invest more time in research.
